Recently we went for an ear check up and the doctor said Claire’s ears were blocked. A week later we went for syringing (they spray high pressure saline water in the ear to get the dirt to flow out). Honestly, the stuff coming out was pretty disgusting and made me want to get my ears cleaned too.
The genesis of all this; Claire had a bad habit of watching things at maximum volume. Think of yourself, after a long day and how much you desire peace and quiet. You give your phone to your child, even though its not recommended and justify its for a few minutes as you get settled and catch up with the kids. Then one of the said kids, blasts the phone and makes your head feel like it will split open. And peace walks out the door just like that.
Anyway, a few days after the cleaning, I noticed this is no longer an issue. When she takes the phone, you are not even sure what she is watching. No more screaming for quiet and just like that, things are more peaceful. Yes, I know, this is not permission for her to spend all her time playing with a phone.
Now, this prompted a deeper thought in me. I wondered, how many things I have blamed my kids for that were not their fault? She couldn’t help her hearing issues, it was on us as her parents to ensure she had the care she needed. Is there something else I am passing blame on while the responsibility for execution sits with me? Maybe even on matters discipline. Do I blame my kids for indiscipline but refuse to correct them and guide them as I should?
Parenting is not easy irrespective of whether we are raising neurodivergent or typical children. My prayer is for wisdom and the humility to ask for help when we need it.
Dear God, help us as we parent, give us wisdom and the resources we need to raise Godly children. Amen
