Parenting in the Spectrum

Miss Persistent

I attended a parenting conference a week ago and one of the speakers asked us to reflect on that thing about our kids that we like and are grateful for and also that thing we worry about the most when it comes to them.

Now, the worry list is a bit long, I naturally tend to worry and overthink. A flaw I am working on but not there yet. But what to be grateful for, I needed a minute to think on this one without being superficial. Yeah, I need also to work on my attitude of gratitude as well.

One of the things that stands out for me about Claire is how persistent this little girl can be. Case in point, yesterday she started by asking for a chocolate cake and I told her “no, won’t be doing it today”. Wheat and sugar issues on a child with autism and ADHD. So, she waits a few minutes and asks for a carrot cake. Same response as before. Next thing I know, she has gone and gotten the flour and sugar out, tells me “baking” and “chocolate cake” and I acknowledge its game over, she has won that round. So off we go, we had fun baking a chocolate cake with my kids and just as much fun eating it.

Looking back, if she had not kept at it, I would not have done it. Made me think about that woman in the bible who kept going back to the judge who did not fear God until she got a solution.

My challenge, what else can I learn from my children? What can I appreciate more and help them develop?

This strong spirit that does not easily give up is something I thank God for. If it does not work out one way, try another way. Be persistent.
